THE EVO+ VISIAN ICL LENS IN PHAKIC SURGERY
About Phakic ICL
The PHAKIC ICL is a surgical adjustment of refractive error using a highly safe lens that is tailored to each eye’s parameters, directly implanted behind the iris and in front of the lens. This method provides high definition images without eroding or changing the cornea shape. Phakic ICL has an adjustment threshold of up to 18 diopter myopia or 10 diopter hyperopia, accompanied by 6 diopter astigmatism.
So what are the characteristics of EVO+ Visian ICL which is used in Phakic surgery at Japan International Eye Hospital? What are its advantages and who will be suitable? Let's find out with us.
The Phakic ICL Surgery has been approved in Europe since 1997 and in the U.S since 2005. The first-generation model was enclavated in a fold of midperipheral iris stroma which did help in improving vision. However, the lens caused glare at night and also was very easy to notice when someone looked into the eyes. As a result, the first generation model was quickly replaced with the second generation - intraocular lens ICL which is located in the posterior chamber and rested behind the iris. Nevertheless, this generation did not have a central artificial hole for aqueous circulation in the eyes. Therefore, the doctor would need to do some “trick” to make space in the posterior amber for the lens to come in and also limit the chance of a sudden rise in eye pressure.
Subsequently, the 4th generation ICL was introduced with the addition of one central artificial hole. With the development of technology, the newest version of the EVO Visian ICL - the 5th generation has 5 artificial holes to improve aqueous humour circulation, optimize patient comfort and prevent a buildup of pressure within the eye after.
The EVO+ Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is manufactured exclusively by STAAR Surgical in Switzerland. The EVO+ Visian ICL is made of Collamer Hydrophilic. This collamer provides excellent biocompatibility: a blend of polymer and collagen which is biocompatible, soft, flexible, transparent and has only >100 micron thickness. They feel natural in the eye. The EVO Visian ICL will be placed into a space of the eye directly behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) and in front of the natural lens.
Why choose EVO+ Visian ICL?
Large range of refractive error correction: The EVO Visian ICL provides correction up to -18 Diopters of Myopia, up to +8 Diopters of Hyperopia and up to 6 Diopters of Astigmatism
Flexibility: While EVO Visian ICL can permanently correct your vision, the lens can be
removed to keep pace with advancing technology and your future needs.
HD Results: Visian ICL allows you to enjoy a new level of vision that’s sharper, clearer, more vivid, and has greater depth and dimension. Night vision is also improved with no induction of halos or glare.
No Dry Eye Syndrome: By not removing and reshaping the corneal tissue, the EVO+ Visian ICL procedure does not induce dry eye syndrome
UV Protection: The unique Collamer material provides UV protection
Proven safety and efficacy: The lens contain 5 artificial holes to improve aqueous humour circulation and prevent a buildup of pressure within the eye
With newer technologies Phakic ICL has many advantages over Lasik:
A Quick Procedure and Recovery: The EVO+ Visian ICL material enables the insertion method to be minimally invasive. With only 3.5mm insert, the doctor can optimize the procedure and recovery time dramatically. Additionally, the procedure is also painless because of the numbing medication. Patients can usually expect a 15–20 minute procedure or less and most people
are able to resume daily activities in just a few days with clearer vision.
Efficiency: The lens is individually manufactured following each eye’s parameters, ensuring high accuracy and efficiency of the treatment.
- Implantable Collamer Lens are often used for patients from age 18 to 45 and refractive error needs to be stable for at least one year prior.
- People who are not eligible for Lasik surgery ( SBK Lasik, Femtosecond Lasik and Relex Smile) due to thin corneas
- Implantable Collamer Lens are a good option to treat myopia from 0.5 diopter to 18 diopter with 6 diopter astigmatism or hyperopia from 0.5 diopter and 10 diopter.
- Patients with a shallow anterior chamber
- Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Patients who has abnormal corneal structural (pyramidal cornea)
- Patients with amblyopia or blindness in one eye
- Patients who have a low endothelial cell count or abnormal endothelial cells
- Patients who have high eye pressure
- Patients who have cataracts and need to undergo cataract surgery.
Results after Phakic ICL EVO + surgery of each patient will not be the same depending on the eye condition of each patient. After surgery, there may be risks such as: glaucoma, swelling, temporary vision loss... Therefore, preoperative examination and diagnosis should be done carefully and closely to predict the outcome. Postoperative visual acuity results, more importantly, to assess the suitability of the eye for the EVO+ Visian ICL intraocular lens to eliminate possible risks.
As the first hospital to apply the Phakic Surgery in Vietnam, Japan International Eye Hospital has successfully performed thousands of Phakic surgeries for patients with severe myopia and thin corneas. With the outstanding advantages of EVO+ Visian ICL lenses, patients with severe myopia and thin corneas who are eligible for surgery can safely regain clear vision with Phakic surgery.
